The discovery this year was young baritone Daniel Carison. The heightened sense of romantic wonder and elevated nobility he brought to Schumann’s Liederkreis, again with Gugnin accompanying, made an indelible impression. This year’s festival was its finest: overflowing, thrilling and joyous.

Special applause could also be enjoyed by the young baritone Daniel Carison. The award winner of the "German Australian-Opera Grant", who will be part of the ensemble from the beginning of the season, played a very convincing and compelling role for Benjamin Russell as Masetto.

Als eingesprungener Masetto überzeugt Daniel Carison mit einer sympathischen Mischung aus Minimachismo und Verlegenheit.

As a Masetto, Daniel Carison convinces with a likeable mixture of minimachismo and embarrassment.

Gugnin was the sensitive interpreter of Schumann’s Scenes from Childhood, and was an excellent accompanist for young baritone Daniel Carison in Schumann’s Liederkreis. A singer just on the threshold of what could be a stellar career, Carison has a fine voice and lives the songs as he sings them.

Then came on Daniel Carison, playing the role of Papageno, a birdcatcher, who is the everyday laymen of the show’s ecosystem. Papageno’s songs were reflective of his simple personality– only a man in search of decent food and a young wife. Carison did a stunning job at embodying Papageno. He was the perfect amount of playful but also eloquently showcased Papageno’s yearning for a better life. Papageno is definitely one of those characters that you remember the most after you leave the hall. Carison was a big part of this success– he was definitely an outlier– in a good way.
